What Is the Monkey App, and Who Runs It?

Monkey is a random video chat that puts you on camera with a stranger and lets you move on to the next match. Most people know it as the Monkey app, and it lives at monkey.app; the older address, monkey.cool, now forwards there. Around the video matches sit swipeable profile Cards, group video called Squad Chat, a DUO mode for teaming up with a friend, and text messages.

Put together from Monkey's Google Play listing, its homepage and the screens of its web app, read on 8 October 2026.

The company behind it is Oviedo Interactives Limited, with offices in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, while the Google Play listing names the developer as Monkey Group and says the app was created by five teens in LA. Its homepage calls Monkey the premier Omegle alternative, and its own Omegle page notes that the original site closed in 2023.

If Omegle itself is what you miss, our Omegle alternative page covers what happened to it and where people went next.

Monkey's column comes from its homepage, Terms, Privacy Policy, Safety Center, Google Play listing and web app, read on 8 October 2026. None of its documents carries a date.

If a Monkey video call with one stranger was the part you liked, our 1v1 video call page shows why WHO never adds a third person to a call.

Why Monkey Asks You to Log In First

Monkey does not start until you have an account. Its homepage FAQ gives the reason: a 1-tap social login is meant as a shield against bots, so that every match is a real person. Its Omegle page goes further, calling the old no sign-up model outdated and describing 1-tap entry as its replacement.

The login also opens a profile. Monkey's privacy policy lists what registration can collect, from a username, selfie and date of birth to a phone number and an Instagram friend list, and your profile is discoverable to other users unless you turn that off in settings. To meet someone before sharing any of that, pick a service without accounts.

How Monkey lets you log in

“Monkey utilizes a 1-tap social login. This essential step acts as a powerful shield against automated bots.”

Is the Monkey App Free? Where the Limits Start

Downloading Monkey and matching at random cost nothing, but the free part has a daily ceiling. When the day's free matches are used up, the web app says today's matches have reached the limit and offers two ways on: watch a video, or get Monkey Plus for unlimited matches. Choosing whether you meet men or women runs through paid offers too, sold as more or unlimited gender filter access.

WHO App Live: talking is free, and none of the paid extras is needed to hold a conversation.

Read the refund rule before paying. Monkey's community guidelines say all sales are final, with rare exceptions, and they list what is never refunded: anything already used, an expiring or renewed Plus period, and purchases on an account suspended for a violation. Cancelling stops the next renewal but does not return the current period.

For what stays free on WHO and which extras cost money, our free video call page breaks the costs down.

When Monkey Restricts or Bans an Account

Monkey's guidelines say AI tools and manual reviews watch public display and matching, and a violation can mean a temporary or permanent suspension of matching or of the whole account. Its Safety Center sets out the usual path: AI flags a problem, video chat is restricted during review, the restriction lifts if the account is cleared, and repeat violations end in permanent suspension.

The terms leave Monkey more room than that. They allow it to end or suspend an account immediately, without prior notice, for any reason whatsoever. That weighs most on anyone who has paid for a plan, because purchases held by a suspended account are excluded from refunds.

The appeal route Monkey names is an email to hello@monkey.app, quoting the user ID that its ban screen shows. A flag about age is appealed with an ID photo, and the app warns there is only one chance to get it right.

What Monkey Keeps, and What WHO Does Not Store

Monkey's privacy policy is open about what it can hold. With your consent it may collect your location, down to GPS, and store your phone contacts. It also says photos and videos of you may be captured by other users, then stored and used by Monkey or by services such as Instagram or Snapchat for moderation. Deleting the account starts a 30 day pause before removal, and some traffic data may stay for a year.

WHO App Live keeps less by design. Video calls are not stored or recorded, and nothing from a chat is kept once it ends. The person on the other side sees your camera and whatever you choose to say, not your location or contact details. An account, if you ever make one, is only there for browsing who is online.

Apps and Sites Like Monkey

Monkey alternatives differ most in what they want before the first call: a login, a subscription for filters, or nothing at all. Each entry below says where it stands, based on the service's own store listing or site, and our pick comes first.

WHO App Live Our pick

No account, browser first

Press start in a browser and a random person appears, with no profile to build. Every call is 1v1, a language or region filter is optional, and Next, Block and Report stay on screen. Starting is free; some extras cost money.

Azar

Profiles and a Lounge

Azar is the nearest in shape to Monkey: a phone app with a Lounge for browsing profiles, following and messaging people, and voice to subtitle translation. Choosing who you meet by gender and region is part of its subscription.

Camsurf

Web, Android, anonymous

Camsurf, around since 2015, runs on the web and as an Android app, and its listing says you can video chat anonymously without logging in. Connections can be filtered by location and by language.

OmeTV

Start or swipe, VIP plan

OmeTV lets you pick a country and press Start or swipe to the next person, and its video chat is free. Its Android app adds VIP Lounge, a monthly subscription that opens with a 7 day trial.

Weighing it up? Our OmeTV alternative page compares it with WHO line by line.

Chatspin

No profiles, Plus for filters

Chatspin skips profiles altogether, so you can stay anonymous and swipe right for a new chat. Location filters, and choosing whether you meet men or women, come with Chatspin Plus.

For more services set side by side, our video chat alternatives hub collects every comparison we have written.

Details from each service's Google Play listing, read on 8 October 2026, and from OmeTV's own site. We do not link to any of them; read their terms before you sign up.

Leaving Monkey for Your First WHO Call

Leaving takes two steps on Monkey's side. Cancel any Plus renewal first, since cancelling is what stops the next charge, then delete the account under Me, Settings, Delete account; Monkey may ask you to confirm your identity. On WHO, open the site in the browser you already use, press Start Video Chat and allow the camera when asked. The first person loads straight away.

On an iPhone or an Android phone

Monkey's homepage sends iPhone and desktop users to its web version, and on 8 October 2026 we found no Monkey app in Apple's App Store in eight countries. WHO is not in the App Store either: on an iPhone, open it in Safari and save it to your home screen. Android owners can install the WHO app from Google Play or stay in the browser.

Matching on WHO is random by default, and our random video chat page shows what happens between one call and the next.

Questions About Monkey and Switching Away

Is Monkey the same as Omegle?

No, they were never the same service. Monkey is run by Oviedo Interactives Limited and describes itself as an Omegle alternative, with its own accounts, profiles and paid plans, while Omegle itself is no longer running.

Can I use the Monkey app without logging in?

No. Monkey's FAQ says an account is needed to get started. If the login is what puts you off, choose a service that starts without one; WHO App Live and Camsurf both do.

Can I get a refund for Monkey Plus?

Rarely. Monkey calls all sales final. Where the law allows a refund, it runs through the policy of the store or payment provider you used, so start there. In the EU the 14 day withdrawal right is waived once the plan begins.

Is Monkey available in every country?

No. Its terms name countries and territories where it does not provide the service, among them Russia, Belarus, Iran, Cuba, Syria, North Korea and Crimea. There, the web app reports that Monkey is not available in your country.

What are the best apps like Monkey?

The best Monkey alternative depends on what you want to keep. For a phone app with profiles, Azar is closest. For calls without a login, try WHO App Live or Camsurf. For swiping with no profiles, Chatspin.

Is WHO a free Monkey app alternative?

Yes. A call costs nothing and needs no card and no account. Paid extras exist, but every one of them is optional.

What is Monkey chat?

It is simply another name for Monkey, the app at monkey.app, which some people also write as one word, monkeyapp. Monkey chat is not a separate service.
